How Youth Baseball Coaches Are Using Pocket Radar and GameChanger to Develop Better Pitchers

When the Radar Gun Lights Up, Everything Changes

Cody King sits behind the backstop at a Houston travel ball tournament with an iPhone in one hand and a Pocket Radar Smart Coach in the other, pointed at the mound. His 11U team warms up nearby. One of his pitchers fires the ball down the plate, then mouths the question every kid on the team asks now.

“What is it?”

Cody grins. “55 miles per hour.”

The kid nods, locks in, and goes back to firing fastballs.

Quick and casual, this exchange has become part of the team's rhythm. The boys track where they are, where their teammates stand, and whether they're gaining ground.

Cody calls it “healthy competition.”

He’s not wrong.

When Data Closes the Gap

As general manager for his son’s travel team, a role he's held alongside coaching duties for years, Cody runs GameChanger with the Pocket Radar Smart Coach integration active. The velocity data feeds directly into the play-by-play, visible to anyone following along.

A few years back, Cody bought the radar on impulse. It’s since become one of the most valuable tools in his coaching kit.

“So few teams invest in this,” he told us. “But if you want to play at the elite level, you need to know where you are and how you stack up.”

He has a point. At the highest levels, tournaments post velocity data for all to see. But oftentimes, such data is less accessible. In other words, most teams are flying blind.

The Pocket Radar and GameChanger integration helps close that gap. It gives any youth baseball coach or team manager with an iPhone and a radar gun access to the pitch tracking technology many teams enjoy. Additionally, tracking velocity during games helps coaches monitor pitcher fatigue and player health. Sometimes, even a slight drop in velo could be an early indicator that something might be off with a pitcher.

These days, Cody doesn't keep his setup to himself. At games, the Pocket Radar is out in the open. Cody wants other coaches and teams to notice. Often, he'll wave them over to walk them through the integration, showing them what the data looks like. “It's a valuable tool,” he says. “If you're going to be growing into that space, come take a look."

For volunteer coaches like Cody, the integration helps level the playing field — giving coaches access to pitcher velocity data that can sharpen performance and inform development all season long.

Pitch Velocity Tracking That Tells a Story Over a Season

Parent and scorekeeper Donald Harter also knows what such access can do. He’s been using the integration for about three years, back when you had to manually scroll and select speeds. Now, he scores high school games with his full setup: iPad, Pocket Radar, Mevo camera, and even walk-up music.

There’s a favorite story Harter likes to share.

During his eldest son’s senior season, he and a teammate both started the year throwing around 80 miles per hour. GameChanger logged every pitch, showing the boys just where they stood, especially compared to each other.

The friendly rivalry and ongoing training paid off. By season’s end, both pitchers were pushing 86 mph.

“That competition helped,” Donald says. “They knew what their velocity was, so they trained harder. It was fun to watch.”

Donald also uses the radar to teach his pitchers something subtler than raw speed: the gap between their fastball and their off-speed pitches. A kid throwing 80 on his fastball but clocking 77 has room for improvement. The radar delivers real numbers, giving pitchers and coaches something specific to work on.

For scorekeepers like Donald, the integration creates a record of measurable growth. Coaches, parents, and players alike can track development, and spot patterns, especially when something isn’t working. Those numbers tell a story over time.

The Kid Who Hit 90

A self-described techie, Andrew Erickson also volunteers as scorekeeper for his son’s high school team. His dad kept score at his games with a pencil and a paper scorebook. Andrew continues that tradition with a twist: GameChanger and a Pocket Radar Smart Coach pointed at the mound.

He also streams every game. Grandparents at home send him messages like this afterward: “Thank you. I got to see him hit that double. I have that video forever.

Originally, Andrew bought the Pocket Radar to track his son's velocity for recruiting. Then he noticed other uses. His team could see what an opposing pitcher was actually throwing in-game — not the showcase max listed online, but what he was really sitting at that day.

That changes how you approach the plate.

Then there was the night an opposing pitcher hit 90 against Andrew’s team for the first time in his high school career.

"He posted about joining the 90 mph club on X," Andrew explains. “He wouldn’t have had that moment without this integration."

Andrew keeps all his GameChanger data public. The way he sees it, once you’re past 10 years old, there’s no reason to hide the numbers. They help players understand where they are — and maybe how to get to 90 someday.

More Than a Number on a Screen

What connects these three stories is what happens when youth baseball coaches and scorekeepers close the data gap. When everyone has access to information in real time, performance shifts and players can develop into better athletes.

All three volunteers had ideas about where the Pocket Radar and GameChanger integration could go next — more prominent velocity displays during game streams, a max velocity per game stat, and broader device compatibility.

GameChanger is listening, and that kind of feedback helps make the integration better. It’s also a reminder that the game improves, and so do the players, with the help of committed volunteers like Cody, Donald, and Andrew.
